Assam: Tragedy Strikes as Wall Collapse Claims Lives of Father and Minor Son in Cachar District

Guwahati, 2nd July: A heartbreaking incident unfolded on July 1st in Haltakandi, Durganagar Part 1, under the Udharbond constituency of Cachar district, Assam, when a father and his six-month-old son lost their lives after a mud wall collapsed due to incessant rain.

The victims, identified as Azir Uddin Barbhuiya and his infant son Ashif Uddin, tragically died when the unstable structure collapsed on them during the night. Heavy rainfall in the preceding days had weakened the mud wall, leading to its fatal collapse.

Despite government initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana aimed at providing housing for all, the Barbhuiya family, consisting of nine members including women and children, had been living in precarious conditions without the benefits promised by such schemes.

At the time of the incident, the family was asleep when the mud wall gave way, burying them under debris. While Azir Uddin Barbhuiya and Ashif Uddin succumbed to their injuries instantly, several other family members sustained injuries. Local residents, upon hearing the collapse, rushed to the scene and initiated rescue operations, managing to save those trapped under the debris.

The tragedy has sparked widespread sorrow and outcry in the community, underscoring the urgent need for effective implementation of housing programs and essential services to safeguard all citizens from such calamities.
