Assam Transport Minister Stresses On Road Rules Compliance

Guwahati: Assam Transport Minister Parimal Suklabaidya underlined the necessity of reducing vehicle over speeding in the state. He stated that 70 percent of accidents occur due to rash-driving.

The minister demanded expanded campaigns to raise awareness of road safety, particularly in rural regions, according to an official press release.

The minister ordered the transport department to coordinate its efforts with those of the Assam Police to ensure that traffic laws are upheld and that two-wheeler drivers always wear helmets, it said.

Chairing a meeting of State Road Safety Council (SRSC), Suklabaidya, gave instructions to senior officials of the transport and other line departments to take action to prevent vehicle overspeeding, which is a factor in 70% of accidents.

The minister requested that, in collaboration with the appropriate district transport authorities (DTOs), the Panchayat and Rural Development Department execute an awareness campaign among two- and four-wheeler drivers at the gaon panchayat level.

In addition, Suklabaidya requested that various agencies fill potholes as part of their efforts to reduce traffic accidents.

It was also determined at the meeting to take strong action against anyone caught driving while intoxicated.

He requested that authorities erect roadside markers in Assamese and other languages.
