Assam: Truck Carrying Gas Cylinders Collides with Divider on NH 17, Two Injured

Guwahati, 4th July: In a significant road incident on National Highway 17 in Jogighopa, Assam, a truck transporting approximately 300 gas-filled cylinders collided with a highway divider. The accident occurred when the truck, traveling at high speed, lost control and struck the divider, leading to a major crash.

The high-impact collision caused chaos at the scene, with both the truck driver and the handyman sustaining injuries. The Jogighopa police promptly arrived at the site to manage the situation and provide necessary assistance to the injured. The collision also displaced the highway divider, highlighting a recurrent issue that contributes to frequent accidents on this stretch of the highway.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident while managing the aftermath. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, averting a potential major tragedy.

In response to the increasing number of road accidents, the Union Ministry has introduced a pilot scheme in collaboration with the National Health Authority (NHA) in Chandigarh and Assam. This initiative aims to provide cashless treatment for victims of road accidents, covering expenses up to Rs. 1.5 lakh for a maximum of seven days from the date of the accident. The scheme, implemented under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), offers immediate and essential medical care to those affected by road mishaps.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced on national highways, underscoring the need for continued efforts to improve road infrastructure and safety measures.
