Assam: Two suspected poachers arrested for killing elephant in Goalpara’s Lakhipur

Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on wildlife poaching, two suspected poachers have been arrested in Assam’s Goalpara by a Forest Department team in connection with the killing of a wild elephant.

Shahjahan Ali, a resident of Jurigaon in Goalpara, was arrested on suspicion of elephant hunting.

As per sources, the incident occurred on November 16 in Fakirmara village under the Lakhipur subdivision, where a wild elephant was found dead.

The hunter identified as Sashadhar Rabha from Meghalaya’s Fakirmara allegedly cut off the elephant’s tusks after killing it.

Following the incident, the forest department officials immediately arrested the hunters.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the origins of the tusks and uncover any potential links to broader poaching networks.

This incident adds to a string of recent arrests related to wildlife crimes in Assam.
