Assam: ULFA-I Cadre Arrested After Grenade Blast in Tinsukia
Guwahati, 23rd November: Following a minor grenade explosion on November 22 in Assam’s Tinsukia, reports surfaced regarding the apprehension of an active member of the proscribed armed rebel group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I).
Initial reports identified the detained ULFA-I cadre as Achyutanand Neog, also known as Niloy Asom, with officials indicating his involvement in planning the explosion.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, Niloy Asom and his wife had joined the banned insurgent group in 2022.
Officials noted that, currently, Niloy’s wife remains within the ULFA-I camp.
The arrest comes in response to Assam DGP GP Singh’s commitment to taking decisive action in the aftermath of the explosion.
The director general of Assam Police remarked on the “strange coincidence” that this incident occurred concurrently with heightened attention on the APSC scam by the state government and police force.
Preliminary reports detailed that the grenade blast occurred at an army camp in Kopahtoli, situated in the Dirak village falling under the Kakopathar tehsil in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
According to received information, two miscreants on bikes arrived and threw the grenade at the army camp during the celebrations for ULFA-I protest day.
Despite the ensuing loud explosion, fortunately, no security personnel suffered injuries. Post-explosion, a team of senior officials from Tinsukia Police promptly reached the scene to assess the situation.
In a post on X, the Assam DGP wrote, “It is a strange coincidence that the day Assam Government and @assampolice starts taking revitalised action on APSC Scam, there is a minor blast by miscreants in Tinsukia district of Assam. This looks like an attempt to draw attention of senior leadership of police away from APSC Scam investigation.”
“Such miscreants and organisations would always try to stifle efforts to improve Assam. We would identify and punish perpetrators of this, and all such attempts that are made to divert our attention from improve our state. We remain committed to reach the bottom of the scam and punish all who are involved in it,” added GP Singh.
