Assam Undergoes Major Bureaucratic Shake-Up

Guwahati, Assam – In a decisive move to bolster public service and streamline administrative functions, the Assam government has undertaken a significant reshuffle of its top bureaucratic ranks, reassigning key Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to new portfolios across various departments. The strategic transfers aim to enhance efficiency and ensure more focused governance.

Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has been relieved of his additional responsibility as head of the Industries, Commerce & Public Enterprises Department, allowing him to dedicate his full attention to his primary duties as the state’s top bureaucrat.

In a notable shift, Diganta Barah, who previously served as IGP (SB) and Director of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, Dergaon, has been appointed Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam in the Tourism Department. He will also hold additional charge of the Home & Political Department, overseeing crucial areas such as Forensics, Jails, and Home Guards.

Dr. B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary for Labour Welfare, Skill, Employment & Entrepreneurship, Cultural Affairs, and Transformation & Development, has been moved to the Panchayat & Rural Development Department as Additional Chief Secretary. He will, however, retain his existing responsibilities for Cultural Affairs and Skill Development, and will continue to chair the State Level Recruitment Commission for Class-IV Posts.

Dr. John Berchmans Ekka, formerly the Additional Chief Secretary for Panchayat & Rural Development, Tea Tribes & Adivasi Welfare, and Tourism, has been reassigned to the Industries, Commerce & Public Enterprises Department as Additional Chief Secretary. He will also take on additional charges in the Labour Welfare and Tea Tribes & Adivasi Welfare Departments.

Further strengthening the administrative framework, Dilip Kumar Borah, currently Secretary to the Government of Assam for Finance, Handloom, Textile, and Sericulture Departments and MD of the Assam Silk Outreach Mission, has been given an additional charge as Secretary of the Transformation & Development Department.

These strategic appointments underscore the Assam government’s commitment to improving governance and ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of public services across the state.
