Assam: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, conducted a detailed review of the ongoing runway expansion work at Dibrugarh Airport during a meeting with the airport’s advisory panel on December 22.
The meeting focused on various aspects of the airport’s infrastructure, underlining its pivotal role in the development of Northeast India.
Highlighting the transformative developments under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Sonowal stated, “Since 2014, Dibrugarh has seen remarkable growth, with the airport evolving into a gateway for Northeast India’s prosperity.” He praised the government’s efforts in boosting connectivity and modernizing infrastructure, which have turned the airport into a hub for trade, tourism, and development, linking the region to global networks.
The minister emphasized the significant impact of the ‘UDAN’ scheme, noting how the initiative has revolutionized domestic aviation by enhancing airport infrastructure, increasing flight frequencies, and making air travel more accessible for citizens across India.
Sonowal also expressed optimism about the runway expansion project, which is slated for completion by 2025. “Dibrugarh Airport, a crucial hub for Assam and the Northeast, has been a central focus of the government’s modernization efforts. With the ongoing infrastructure upgrades, the airport is poised to become a symbol of progress for the region. Based on discussions with officials, the runway expansion is expected to be completed next year,” he added.
The runway expansion is expected to bolster regional connectivity and further integrate Northeast India into the national and international aviation network, reinforcing the central government’s commitment to fostering growth in the region.
