Assam: UPPL Fields Veteran Leaders in First List for BTC Polls

Kokrajhar: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) today made a strategic move for the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) general elections, releasing its first list of 18 candidates.

The announcement, made by working president and Rajya Sabha MP Rwngwra Narzary, signals the party’s full-throttle preparation for the crucial polls.

The list is a blend of experience, with a majority of names being well-known faces from the party’s senior leadership, sitting MLAs, and current executive members of the BTC.

The candidates on the list include a number of prominent figures in Bodoland politics. Among them are Kokrajhar East MLA Lawrence Islary, Tamulpur MLA Jolen Daimary, and UPPL general secretary Raju Kumar Narzary. The party has also put its faith in former Assam minister Chandan Brahma and a slew of sitting BTC Executive Members, including Dr Nilut Swargiary, Wilson Hasda, Ranjit Basumatary, Saikhong Basumatary, and Dhananjay Basumatary.

Other names on the first list are Saranjit Basumatary (Jamduar), Afjal Hoque Sarkar (Fakiragram), Rabiram Brahma (Banargaon), Mantu Boro (Koklabari), Rakesh Brahma (Mushalpur), Kati Ram Baro (Baganpara), Rabindra Bala Biswas (Darangajuli), Pradip Narzary (Shuklai Serfang), and Rujugwra Muchahary (Dhwnshri).

Speaking to the press, Narzary confirmed that the UPPL would go it alone in the elections, contesting all 40 constituencies independently. He added that the party’s second list of candidates would be released in the coming days. The announcement marks the start of an intense electoral battle in the Bodoland Territorial Region, with the UPPL looking to consolidate its hold on the council.
