Assam: UPPL Government Faces Protests in Baksa Over Deteriorating Infrastructure and Collapsed Bridge

Guwahati, September 23: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) government in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is under increasing pressure as protests erupted in Baksa, with demonstrators targeting local MLA Urkhao Goura Brahma and the ruling administration. The unrest was triggered by the collapse of a crucial bridge, leaving several villages cut off from the main road network.

Hundreds of residents took to the streets, blocking roads and raising slogans against the government’s perceived inaction. Protesters voiced their frustration over the deteriorating infrastructure, specifically pointing to the collapse of the bridge, which has severely disrupted transportation for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Local protesters criticized MLA U.G. Brahma’s three-year tenure, accusing him of failing to deliver tangible development in the Chapaguri constituency. “In these three years, we have received nothing but hollow promises,” remarked a protester.

The situation worsened with the collapse of the road linking Dumuni and Daodhara in Baksa district, where erosion has created a large pit, rendering the road unsafe for vehicles. Only bicycles can navigate the treacherous route, while pedestrians face serious safety hazards.

Protesters chanted slogans like “Pramod Boro Hai Hai” and “Urkhao Gaura Brahma Hai Hai,” demanding immediate government action to repair the damaged infrastructure. Many criticized BTR Chief Pramod Boro’s ambitious claims of turning the region into a “Switzerland,” highlighting the stark contrast between the government’s promises and the grim realities on the ground.

The protesters have called for swift intervention from the BTR government, urging them to repair the collapsed bridge and restore safe passage for all affected villagers.
