Assam: USTM Chancellor gets bail in CBSE Exam Anomalies Case
Guwahati: Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), was granted bail by the Gauhati High Court in Guwahati, Assam on Monday.
He was arrested in a case related to alleged CBSE exam anomalies.
Hoque was arrested by Assam Police on February 22 for allegedly receiving payment to facilitate unfair practices during the CBSE Class 12 Physics examination.
However, another bail plea for a separate case is scheduled for hearing tomorrow.
It may be mentioned that last week a group of prominent Muslim citizens, including former chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi and former Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing deep concern over the arrest of Mahbabul Hoque.
Hoque who was arrested from his Guwahati residence last Saturday was accused of involvement in a network that lured students with promises of high marks through fraudulent means, as claimed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The group, part of the civil society organisation ‘Citizens For Fraternity’ termed Hoque’s arrest as “pure vendetta” and urged PM Modi to ensure justice in the matter.
They alleged that Hoque’s arrest was aimed at demoralizing progressive members of society and preventing efforts to establish modern secular institutions.
