Assam Villagers Protest Proposed Stone Quarry in Milmilia Reserved Forest

Bamunigaon: A proposed stone quarry in the heart of the ecologically sensitive Ekcheliya Hill has ignited a fierce battle between environmental activists and commercial interests. The serene hill, nestled within the Milmilia Reserved Forest, is now the epicenter of a growing controversy.

The seven-hectare hill, known for its lush greenery and diverse wildlife, is under threat from plans to extract stone using heavy machinery and explosives. This move has sparked widespread outrage among local residents who fear the irreversible damage it could cause to the fragile ecosystem.

On Wednesday, a fervent protest was organized by the Bamunigaon Yuva Sangha, drawing a large crowd of concerned citizens. Speakers at the event highlighted the ecological significance of the hill and the potential consequences of the proposed quarry. They vowed to fight tooth and nail to protect their natural heritage.

Tankeshwar Rabha, the Chief Executive Member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, expressed strong opposition to the project, stating, “We will not allow the destruction of our tribal forest areas.” He further warned against any unauthorized activities in the region and emphasized the council’s commitment to taking legal action if necessary.

As the conflict escalates, the fate of Ekcheliya Hill hangs in the balance. The local community remains steadfast in its determination to preserve the hill’s pristine beauty and ecological importance for generations to come.
