Assam: Wild Elephant Claims Farmer’s Life in Rangapara
Guwahati: A pall of gloom has descended upon Poglabill village in Assam’s Sonitpur district following a tragic incident on Monday morning. Krishna Kheria, a local farmer, became the latest victim of the escalating human-elephant conflict in the region when he was fatally trampled by a wild elephant in Rangapara.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying moment when the massive creature emerged unexpectedly from the Poglabill-Barjuli connecting road. Kheria was diligently working in his farmland, unaware of the impending danger, when the elephant charged into the field. The attack was swift and brutal, leaving the farmer dead at the scene.
The incident sent shockwaves through the small community, especially after reports that another woman working nearby had a narrow escape. This latest tragedy has amplified the growing fear and anxiety among the farming community, who are increasingly vulnerable to such encounters. The sudden and aggressive behavior of the wild elephant underscores the urgent need for effective solutions to mitigate the human-elephant conflict that has plagued the area.
Responding to the distress calls, a team from the Rangapara Police Station promptly arrived at the location to initiate a preliminary investigation into the unfortunate death. Simultaneously, the residents of Poglabill have voiced their concerns and made a fervent appeal to the forest officials. They are demanding immediate action to drive the rogue elephant back into its natural habitat, emphasizing the critical need for robust preventive measures to safeguard their lives and livelihoods in the future.
