Assam: Wild Elephant Fatally Hit by Speeding Train in Jagiroad

Guwahati, July 10: A tragic collision took place last night, July 9, when a wild elephant was fatally struck by a speeding train while crossing the railway tracks near Sonaikusi forest.

The elephant, which had ventured out of the forest in search of food, was hit around 4-4:30 am as it attempted to cross the tracks. The impact resulted in the immediate death of the animal, shedding light on the persistent conflict between wildlife and human infrastructure.

“A very unfortunate incident took place today,” a local resident recounted. “Wild elephants that had ventured out of the Sonaikusi forest range in search of food in the adjacent village met with a fatal accident when one of the wild elephants was hit by a train while trying to cross over the rail track. Hearing the sound, we came to the spot and found the elephant dead.”

Railway police and forest department personnel swiftly arrived at the scene to handle the situation and ensure the safety of the area. Local residents noted that herds of elephants frequently enter the region, making such tragic encounters an all-too-common occurrence.
