Assam Witnesses 22% Reduction in Road Accident Fatalities
Guwahati, 7th May: Assam’s road accident fatalities have experienced a significant decline, attributed to the implementation of stringent road safety measures across the state.
Recent data indicates a noteworthy 22 percent reduction in road accident deaths from January to April 2024, compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the issue via his social media handle, credited the remarkable decline in fatalities to the relentless enforcement of road safety measures. He stated, “Due to our relentless efforts to enforce road safety measures, fatalities due to road accidents have come down drastically and consistently in the recent past. There has been an overall decline of 22% in road accident fatalities from Jan-Apr ’23 to Jan-Apr ’24.”
The positive trend in road safety measures comes amidst recent road accidents, such as the one that occurred on April 6 in Sarubhagia of Jakhalabandha, Nagaon district. The accident involved a head-on collision between a gas-laden tanker and an Artiga vehicle, resulting in the tragic death of the Artiga vehicle’s driver, identified as Avijit Saikia from Jorhat.
The collision also left two others injured, with one woman sustaining critical injuries. Despite such incidents, the overall decline in road accident fatalities reflects the efficacy of ongoing road safety initiatives in Assam.
