Guwahati, 6th December: The latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals a remarkable 50% reduction in the crime rate in Assam since 2021, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to combating crime through policing reforms.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the substantial decrease in crime rates against women and children, considering it a reflection of the government’s strict actions against offenders. According to the NCRB report, crime against women in Assam dropped from 29,046 cases in 2021 to 14,148 cases in 2022. Similarly, crimes against children decreased from 5,282 cases in 2021 to 4,084 cases in 2022.

Cases of human trafficking also witnessed a decline from 203 cases in 2021 to 140 cases in 2022. However, the NCRB data also revealed an unexpected increase in corruption cases in Assam for 2022. The state reported 57 cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act and related IPC sections, compared to 16 cases in both 2020 and 2021. Despite the rise, approximately 95% of these cases remained pending in the courts at the end of the last year. Among the cases registered in 2022, 50 involved government officials caught in bribery traps, while the remaining cases related to disproportionate assets (four cases) and criminal misconduct (three cases).
