Assam: Woman Commits Suicide For Alleged Dowry-Related Issue in Barpeta

Guwahati: A woman allegedly facing dowry-related problems committed suicide in the Barpeta district of Assam on Tuesday

The deceased has been identified as Nilima Khatun.

According to reports, Khatun was recovered hanging inside her husband’s home.

Nilima’s brother stated, “Mridul Haque and his family used to physically mistreat Nilima after she married them nine months ago. We visited her in-laws on Saturday and attempted to patch things up when we learned of her suicide this morning.”

“Her mother-in-law used to severely abuse her. As dowry, they demanded from us gold jewellery, cars, and other items. They used to torment her emotionally and physically because we were unable to provide. They threatened my sister, so she refused to go back despite my mother’s best efforts,” he added.

He said, “This is a planned murder, not a suicide. When they called to let us know about the event and we arrived at the scene, she had already been brought down and the rope around her neck had been removed. To make it appear as though she committed suicide, they might have strangled her with a rope and hanged her.”

Meanwhile, Kachumara Police took the body to the police station and then sent to Barpeta Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AMSU) and the family of Nilima have urged the police to take decisive action against the accused.
