Assam: Woman’s Elopement Raises Legal and Ethical Concerns
Guwahati: A married woman from Dhumarpathar, Bajali, has reportedly left her husband and eloped with another man, sparking legal and ethical concerns. Kohinur Begum, a resident of Dhumarpathar, had been in a long-term romantic relationship with Aftar Hussain from Panpara.
The situation unfolded when Aftar, who had previously worked with Kohinur’s husband, Mafiz Uddin, in Kerala, developed a close association with the couple. However, their friendship eventually turned into an affair. Upon discovering the relationship, Mafiz Uddin was allegedly shocked when his wife attempted to cover up the situation by filing a rape complaint against Aftar at the Dhumarpathar Police Station.
Despite the legal accusation, Kohinur later eloped with Aftar, leaving Mafiz Uddin behind. Reports suggest that she has since married Aftar, raising questions about the legality of the marriage, as she had not obtained a divorce from her husband. Mafiz Uddin has now filed an official complaint at the Dhumarpathar Police Station, questioning how his wife could remarry without first obtaining a divorce.
Expressing his distress, Mafiz Uddin stated, “If she wants to be with him, let her at least divorce me first.” The incident has sparked concerns about the complexities of marriage and divorce laws in the region.
