Assam: World War II-Era Bomb Safely Defused in Lakhimpur District

Lakhimpur – A 182-kg bomb dating back to World War II, which was discovered in Assam in 2024, was safely defused on February 13 in Lakhimpur district, officials confirmed.

Lakhimpur District Commissioner Pronab Jit Kakoty stated that the bomb was first found by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on September 27, 2024, on the banks of the Jhili river. He confirmed that the explosive was still active at the time of discovery.

The defusal operation was carried out by IAF bomb disposal experts inside the Dulung Reserve Forest, ensuring minimal risk to the public.

Divisional Forest Officer Manoj Kumar Goswami emphasized that extensive safety measures were implemented to protect the wildlife and surrounding ecosystem before neutralizing the bomb.

“We cleared an area of nearly 3.5 km around the site to ensure safety. The operation was executed successfully without any complications,” Goswami stated.

The discovery and safe disposal of the historical explosive highlight the lingering remnants of World War II in Northeast India, a region that witnessed key battles during the war.
