Assam: Young Man Drowns in Brahmaputra River During Kali Puja Ritual Bath

Guwahati— In a tragic incident, a young man lost his life after drowning in the Brahmaputra River while taking a ritual bath ahead of the Goddess Kali idol immersion ceremony.

The incident unfolded on Sunday as three youths from Manipuri Basti participated in the festive rituals by the river.

According to local sources, the young men had entered the river for a holy dip in preparation for the idol immersion, a traditional practice during the Kali Puja celebrations.

While two of the youths managed to return safely to the shore, the third tragically lost his life in the swift currents. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel swiftly arrived on the scene and conducted a search operation, ultimately recovering the deceased’s body.

The deceased has been identified as Brijesh Mahaseth.

The loss has cast a somber mood over the festivities, with family and friends mourning the young man’s untimely death. Authorities have reminded the public to exercise caution around water bodies during such events, especially given the Brahmaputra’s unpredictable and powerful currents.
