Assam: Zubeen Garg Voices Opposition to Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Cultural Event
Guwahati, 7th March: During a cultural event for Manasa Puja in Mushalpur, Baksa on March 6, renowned singer Zubeen Garg took a vocal stance against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Garg deemed the act unnecessary and urged attendees to protest against its implementation. He boldly declared that for as long as he remains active, the CAA will not see fruition.
In his impassioned speech, Garg referenced figures like G.P. Singh and Himanta Biswa Sarma, suggesting that their involvement would not facilitate the enactment of the CAA. Expressing sorrow over the casualties associated with the issue, Garg vowed to strive towards preventing further tragedies.
In a related development, the United Opposition Forum of Assam submitted a memorandum to Indian President Droupadi Murmu via Assam’s Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on February 29. The memorandum calls for the repeal of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 and urges against its implementation in Assam.
The document highlights the strong opposition to the CAA 2019 by political parties and the people of Assam since its introduction in Parliament. Despite vehement protests, the ruling BJP government pushed through the Bill, disregarding the sentiments of Assamese citizens.
Signed by 16 Assam opposition political groups, the memorandum asserts the unconstitutionality of the Act and its threat to the Assam Accord of 1985. The parties argue that the CAA jeopardizes the history, culture, social fabric, economy, and identity of the Assamese people.
They appeal for intervention, urging the Government of India to refrain from implementing the CAA in Assam and calling for its repeal as unconstitutional and anti-national. In the event of disregard, the parties, alongside the people of Assam, threaten to initiate a Democratic Mass Movement to compel the government to repeal the Act. They express hope for necessary action from India’s constitutional Head, as outlined in the memorandum.
