Guwahati, 26th November: Four police personnel, including Nitu Baruah, the Officer-in-Charge of Dhumerghat police station, have been placed under Reserve Close on charges of extortion in Goalpara.

Superintendent of Police V V Rakesh Reddy took action against Nitu Baruah, along with two other officers, Pinku Baruah and Rakibul Islam, as well as home guard Sukumar Barman, accusing them of demanding money and assaulting gamblers during the eviction of illegal gambling in Dhumerghat.

A few days ago, amid the operation against illegal gambling, two junior cops led by Nitu Baruah and a driver assaulted gamblers with lathis, resulting in injuries to one person.

The victim’s family filed a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, urging justice. Serious allegations have also been made against Nitu Baruah for extorting money from gamblers.

Responding to the complaint, the Superintendent of Police initiated the Reserve Close status for the four police personnel, including the Officer-in-Charge of Dhumerghat police station, two days ago.
