Assamese Actress Nandini Kashyap Detained in Fatal Hit-and-Run Case
Guwahati: Prominent Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap has been detained by police for questioning in connection with the tragic hit-and-run incident that led to the death of 21-year-old Samiul Haque, a student from Nalbari Polytechnic. The incident, which occurred on July 25, has ignited widespread public anger and calls for justice across the state.
Kashyap was reportedly taken into custody on Tuesday night from a rehearsal at Rajdhani Theatre in North Guwahati and subsequently brought to the All Women Police Station in Panbazar for interrogation. While an official arrest is yet to be made, police sources have confirmed her detention as part of the ongoing investigation into the devastating accident.
Eyewitnesses claim Samiul Haque was hit by a speeding vehicle, allegedly driven by Kashyap. He succumbed to his injuries at Apollo Hospital four days after the incident, leaving his family and the community in profound grief. The All Assam Polytechnic Students’ Union (AAPSU) has lodged an FIR at Dispur Police Station, demanding stringent legal action against those responsible.
Samiul was known to be a dedicated student who worked night shifts to support his family, and his untimely demise has become a poignant symbol of young aspirations tragically cut short. His devastated family has made an emotional appeal for swift justice and accountability.
The case has triggered strong reactions from various civil society organisations and student bodies, with public protests urging for a speedy and transparent investigation. In response to the public outcry, Rajdhani Theatre, where Kashyap had a two-year contract, has announced the termination of her association, citing the need to protect the institution’s reputation and ongoing productions.
The Assamese film fraternity has also expressed its sorrow. Actor Ravi Sarma, who shared screen space with Kashyap in the film Rudra, conveyed his condolences on social media, stating, “The tragic loss of Samiul Haque has deeply saddened me. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.” Kashyap had a supporting role in Rudra, a film also featuring Adil Hussain, Joy Kashyap, and Archita Agarwal.
Police have initiated a comprehensive probe, which includes scrutinising CCTV footage and collecting forensic evidence. While investigators have not yet officially confirmed if Kashyap was at the wheel, sources suggest that legal proceedings could commence soon based on the evolving findings.
