Assamese Community Celebrates Language and Music in Chennai
Assam: Chennai’s Assamese community came together on November 9 at Assam Bhawan to mark two significant milestones. The occasion celebrated Assamese’s classical language status during Bhaxa Gaurav Hapta and honored legendary musician Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his day.
The week-long language celebration featured captivating poetry recitals, vibrant cultural performances, and thought-provoking discussions showcasing Assamese literary heritage. Community members, particularly youth, actively participated in programs designed to deepen their connection with their mother tongue.
Musical tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, fondly known as the “Bard of Brahmaputra,” included soulful renditions of his iconic songs “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” and “Dil Hoom Hoom Kare.” These timeless classics continue to resonate across regional boundaries.
Eminent guests, including Wapang Toshi, President of Northeast Welfare Association & NCF, and Prithiviraj Singh Tamo, President of Chennai Manipur Forum, emphasized the significance of cultural preservation and unity among northeastern communities.
The joint celebration, organized by Assam Bhawan Chennai, Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, and Assam Association Chennai, drew a diverse crowd of poets, artists, students, and professionals from the region. Attendees praised the dual celebration for fostering bonds within the northeastern diaspora while preserving their linguistic and cultural identity in Tamil Nadu’s capital.
