Assamese Community in Chennai Hosts First-Ever Durga Puja, Celebrating Culture and Unity

Guwahati: The Assamese community in Chennai has embarked on a historic cultural journey with their inaugural Durga Puja celebration, which began on October 9. Organised by the Assam Spiritual Society, the four-day event is being held at Odisha Bhawan in Palikaranai and will continue until October 12.

The organisers anticipate a turnout of 1,500 to 2,000 attendees from Chennai and Pondicherry, representing a significant portion of the 3,000 to 3,500 Assamese residents in the city, many of whom are employed in various sectors such as professional services, hospitality, and security.

Manoj Kumar Sharma, President of the Assam Spiritual Society, emphasized the cultural importance of the event, stating, “We warmly invite everyone in Chennai to join us in celebrating Durga Puja and to partake in this meaningful celebration of our culture and traditions.”

Beyond preserving Assamese customs, the event aims to share the community’s rich heritage with the broader Chennai population. The celebration will feature traditional rituals, cultural performances, Assamese cuisine, and educational workshops to highlight the festival’s spiritual significance and cultural roots.

This first Durga Puja celebration in Chennai seeks to both strengthen ties within the Assamese diaspora and foster a greater cultural exchange with local residents, welcoming all to participate in the festivities.
