Assamese Literary Pioneer Shashi Phukan Passes Away, Founder of ‘Bismoi’ Magazine
Guwahati: Guwahati mourns the loss of Shashi Phukan, the founding editor of the beloved Assamese entertainment magazine, Bismoi, who passed away on Friday.
His demise marks the end of an era for Assamese literature and entertainment journalism, leaving behind a rich legacy that has shaped regional storytelling for decades.
Phukan established Bismoi in 1968, creating a unique space for Assamese cultural expression. Under his guidance, the magazine became a beacon for emerging and established writers, including literary figures like Baidurjya Baruah and Ranju Hazarika.
Through its pages, Bismoi nurtured new talent and broadened the reach of Assamese literature, becoming a staple in households across Assam.
Beyond his editorial achievements, Phukan’s unwavering commitment to Bismoi and the literary community was evident. Even as he battled health challenges, including COVID-19, a recent chest infection, and a head injury, his passion for literature endured until his final years.
However, the magazine’s suspension two years ago, following the death of his wife, signaled the deep bond he shared between his personal life and his work.
Phukan’s contributions have left an indelible mark on Assamese culture. His legacy will continue to live on through the countless writers he inspired and the readers who eagerly awaited each edition of Bismoi.
