Assam’s Chief Minister Exerts Influence in Cabinet Appointment

Guwahati, 9th June: The recent inclusion of Rajya Sabha MP Pabitra Margherita into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet highlights the significant sway held by Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, within the BJP.

The decision to prioritize Margherita over former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb sheds light on intricate internal party dynamics and considerations for regional representation. Despite Deb’s tenure as a former CM and his Lok Sabha victory, Margherita, a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, was chosen, underscoring Sarma’s influence.

Sarma’s pivotal role in this decision is apparent, given his political acumen and strong presence in the Northeast. Margherita’s close association with Sarma, having served as his political secretary, likely played a crucial role in her elevation to the cabinet.

With both Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita representing Assam in Modi’s cabinet, Sarma’s strategic maneuvering is evident, bolstering Assam’s political standing on the national stage. Conversely, Tripura, despite its recent political activity under Deb’s leadership, lacks direct representation in the central cabinet.

Margherita’s inclusion also holds symbolic significance for Assam’s Ahom community, historically underrepresented in Modi’s cabinets. It aims to address the community’s concerns and regain their trust, crucial for the BJP’s regional strategy, particularly after Congress’s victory in Jorhat.

Sarma’s influence in Margherita’s appointment underscores his strategic importance within the BJP. By prioritizing regional representation and addressing community-specific concerns, Sarma solidifies his pivotal role in Northeast Indian politics.

Biplab Deb’s exclusion from the cabinet may reflect a preference for stable leadership at the national level, a decision likely influenced by Sarma’s vision and political strategy.

Sarma’s emphasis on including trusted allies like Margherita reinforces the strength of regional leadership from the Northeast in the central government, showcasing his strategic prowess within the BJP.
