Assam’s Chip Dream Races Ahead, Sarma Says State Outpacing Gujarat
Guwahati, Assam: In a significant development for India’s burgeoning semiconductor industry, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today asserted that the Tata Group’s semiconductor project in Jagiroad, Assam, is progressing at a markedly swifter pace than its twin project in Gujarat. His comments, delivered to the media, highlight a potential shift in the narrative surrounding industrial development in the country.
“Tata has signed two projects together — one in Gujarat and another in Assam’s Jagiroad,” Chief Minister Sarma stated, drawing a direct comparison. “Today, if you compare the development of both projects, I think Assam is miles ahead.” He went on to emphasize Assam’s lead in project execution, a point he underscored with conviction.
The Chief Minister further elaborated on the state’s perceived advantage, claiming, “Assam has scored at least 50 percent more points than Gujarat today.” He invited scrutiny of his claims, urging observers to “visit the Gujarat project and also see the one in Guwahati, which is already in an advanced stage and will be able to produce chips next year.” The Jagiroad facility, dedicated to semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP), represents a cornerstone of the Tata Group’s strategic foray into India’s electronics manufacturing landscape. The accelerated progress of the Assam plant is being widely interpreted as a pivotal moment for the state’s industrial advancement and its growing prominence on the national manufacturing map.
