Assam’s CM Calls for Tech Upskill Amidst Job Boom
Guwahati, Assam: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has underscored the critical need to elevate academic standards in engineering colleges and polytechnics across Assam. His call comes as the state anticipates a significant surge in employment opportunities, driven by fresh investments and the establishment of new industries. The Chief Minister stressed that for the youth to truly capitalise on this burgeoning job market, they must be “industry-ready” and equipped to navigate the complexities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The remarks were made during an appointment letter distribution ceremony in Guwahati, where 342 candidates received their postings under the Department of Higher (Technical) Education. This latest round of appointments pushes the total number of government jobs provided during the current state government’s tenure to an impressive 1,21,182.
Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to fulfilling its electoral promise of providing one lakh government jobs to the state’s youth, highlighting the prioritisation of recruitment to teaching posts in higher education. He noted that the recruitment process for teaching positions across all 26 government polytechnics and seven engineering colleges is nearing completion and is expected to conclude by December this year.
With India projected to become the world’s third-largest economy, Sarma emphasised that employment opportunities within Assam are set to expand considerably. To prepare for this growth, he stressed the importance of nurturing start-ups, incubation centres, and innovation. The Chief Minister also highlighted the imperative of equipping the youth with expertise in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and 3D printing. He urged the newly appointed faculty in engineering colleges and polytechnics to champion fresh thinking, envisioning these institutions not merely as skill development centres but as vibrant incubators for start-ups and innovation.
