Assam’s Criminal Justice System Sees Unprecedented Transformation

GUWAHATI: In a landmark achievement for law enforcement and judicial reform, Assam has recorded an extraordinary decline in crime and a dramatic surge in convictions, marking a significant stride towards a safer state.

According to recent government data, the state has witnessed a staggering 66.8 per cent per lakh population drop in crime rates, while conviction rates have soared to an impressive 56.2 per cent under the new Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS).

The numbers, current as of July 2025, paint a picture of a comprehensive overhaul of the state’s criminal justice system. A notable highlight of this success is the clearance of 90.09 per cent of pending cases since 2021, a feat that has significantly eased the burden on courts and quickened the pace of justice.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to laud the achievement, noting, “The improvement in the law and order situation is quite remarkable. Compared to 2021, there has been a marked decline in crimes and considerable improvement in convictions. @assampolice remains committed to ensure a Safe and Crime Free Assam.” His statement underscores the government’s unwavering focus on creating a secure environment for its citizens.

The 56.2 per cent conviction rate is a testament to the enhanced efficiency and improved quality of investigation and prosecution. This figure, a substantial jump from past outcomes, points to stronger case preparation by law enforcement agencies. The dramatic reduction in case backlogs, with nine out of ten pending matters resolved, further demonstrates the administration’s commitment to judicial efficiency. The decline in crime rates suggests not only better policing but also the effectiveness of various preventive measures and potentially improved socio-economic conditions across the state, contributing to a holistic improvement in public safety.
