Assam’s Infrastructure Push Under Scrutiny as CM Meets Gadkari
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday held a crucial meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi, taking stock of the ongoing infrastructure projects in the state.
The high-level discussion focused on accelerating the completion of several key initiatives deemed vital for Assam’s connectivity and overall development.
Taking to social media platform X, CM Sarma shared insights from the meeting, stating, “In New Delhi today, I had a fruitful meeting with Hon’ble Union Minister Shri @nitin_gadkari Ji. We reviewed the progress of Assam’s flagship infra projects and sought @MORTHIndia’s cooperation in their time-bound completion. Hon’ble Minister has assured us of the Ministry’s undivided focus on this matter.” This engagement underscores the state government’s relentless drive to fast-track critical infrastructure works, aiming for timely completion and maximum impact.
Meanwhile, the political landscape in Assam has been gripped by heightened tensions following an alleged attack on Chief Minister Sarma during his recent visit to Golaghat. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the incident, where Congress workers reportedly hurled water bottles at the Chief Minister. BJP spokesperson Kalyan Gogoi vehemently described the act as an assault on democratic values.
In a press briefing convened at the BJP’s state headquarters, Assam BJP General Secretary Rituparna Baruah lashed out at the Congress, stating, “Unable to counter the Hon’ble Chief Minister and the BJP Government’s politics of liberation and development, the Congress has now resorted to Naxalite-like behaviour.”
Baruah further cautioned, “If the Congress can act in such an undemocratic manner while in Opposition, imagine the consequences if they come to power. Attacking an elected Chief Minister of a state is a reflection of the true political character of the Congress.”
The press conference was also attended by BJP Assam Vice Presidents Manoj Baruah and Rajen Borthakur, along with Chief Spokesperson Kishore Upadhyay, underscoring the gravity with which the party views the incident. In a show of widespread disapproval, the BJP’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), organised protests across all district and sub-divisional headquarters.
Thousands of party workers and BJYM functionaries from 39 organisational districts actively participated in these state-wide demonstrations. Senior party members, including Vice Presidents Ujjar Sharma Bordoloi and Bhabin Singh, General Secretaries Pulak Rajbongshi and Nipan Sarma, and BJYM President Rakesh Das, led the protests, sending a strong message against the alleged act of aggression.
