Assam’s New Administrative Structure: 39 Sub-Districts to Become Operational on October 4

Guwahati, 30th September: Thirty-nine new sub-districts in Assam, aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency, will officially begin operations on October 4, 2024, according to an official notification. These sub-districts, referred to as “Xama-zilla” in Assamese, will have their headquarters operational from the same date.

The notification, signed by MS Manivannan, the commissioner and secretary of the General Administration Department, stated, “The Governor of Assam is pleased to notify that the sub-districts are known as ‘Xama-Zilla’ in Assamese, and 39 nos. of the following Sub-districts ‘Xama-Zilla’ along with the headquarters shall become functional with effect from 4th October 2024 in the public interest.”

Each sub-district will be managed by an assistant district commissioner, supported by two assistant commissioners and a team of officials and staff from various relevant departments.

This initiative is part of the Assam government’s broader strategy to improve grassroots governance, streamline administrative processes, and enhance citizen-centric services. The creation of these sub-districts is expected to maximize synergy, productivity, and efficiency at the local level.
