Assam’s Opposition Leader Slams Govt Over Law and Order, Alleges Misplaced Priorities
Guwahati: Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has pulled no punches in his latest broadside against the state government, directly challenging Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s claims of external conspiracies destabilising the state.
Speaking at a Congress event in Abhayapuri, Bongaigaon, Saikia fired off a volley of accusations, suggesting the government is failing on the law and order front while prioritizing corporate interests over public welfare.
Saikia’s sharpest jab was aimed at the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio. “If these conspiracies are genuine, then it is the Chief Minister’s duty to ensure the police act decisively and nab the culprits,” Saikia asserted. He then took aim at the state’s police force, alleging they are not impartial but instead operate under the government’s influence. This criticism follows recent censure from the High Court, which Saikia highlighted as evidence of the government’s flawed handling of sensitive issues like encounters and eviction drives.
The opposition leader didn’t stop there. He went on to make a serious charge regarding the Umrangso eviction drive, alleging that a massive chunk of land—nearly 3,000 bighas—was transferred to Mahabali Cement Company shortly after the exercises were completed. This, he claimed, is a clear example of the government’s misplaced priorities, accusing them of working against the interests of the common man. Saikia’s remarks paint a picture of a government more concerned with serving specific agendas than with ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
