Assam’s Pobitora Braces for Deluge: Sanctuary on High Alert Ahead of Monsoon

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam: With the monsoon clouds gathering ominously on the horizon, authorities at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary are working round the clock, implementing a comprehensive flood preparedness plan to shield its precious wildlife, dedicated staff, and vital infrastructure from the impending deluge.

Speaking to ANI, Sanctuary Ranger Pranjal Baruah elaborated on the proactive measures. “We are meticulously preparing for the flood situation. This includes a significant focus on developing robust infrastructure, carrying out essential repairs on our boats, and ensuring a substantial stockpile of relief materials is readily available.” The collective effort underscores the urgency and seriousness with which the sanctuary approaches the annual flood challenge.

A critical component of their strategy involves the timely relocation of vulnerable elephant camps. “Our priority is the safety of our captive elephants. We will be shifting their camps to higher ground, specifically the hillside, to ensure they remain secure,” Baruah explained, assuring that adequate food supplies would be provided without delay to these majestic creatures during the displacement.

The safety net extends beyond the animal kingdom, encompassing human lives as well. Residents of low-lying, flood-prone areas in the vicinity of the sanctuary are also slated for relocation to safer zones. Temporary camps are being strategically established to manage logistics, provide shelter, and serve as crucial hubs for emergency response operations.

In a thoughtful move to safeguard its human frontline, health camps are being meticulously planned for the forest staff. “We will organise a health camp for our field staff,” Baruah affirmed, “so that they can access necessary medical support well before the floods hit.” This proactive healthcare initiative aims to bolster the resilience of the dedicated personnel.

Authorities have also reached out to the government, appealing for critical assistance to fortify their flood readiness. “We are requesting the government to provide essential ration and other vital materials for the camps,” Baruah stated, highlighting the need for collective support in this significant undertaking.

Furthermore, an adept emergency response team has been meticulously formed, ready to spring into action for rescue operations. Post-disaster assessments are also on the cards to evaluate damages comprehensively. Identified infrastructure is currently undergoing urgent repairs, and travel routes are being painstakingly mapped to ensure efficient movement and swift emergency evacuations when the need arises. Pobitora stands united, ready to face the monsoon’s might.
