Assam’s Railway Network to Achieve 100% Electrification by 2025: Minister V Somanna

Assam: In a major push towards modernizing railway infrastructure in the Northeast, Minister of State for Railways V Somanna announced that Assam’s railway network will be fully electrified by the end of 2025. Reviewing ongoing projects at Guwahati railway station on Sunday, the minister emphasized the rapid progress in infrastructure development, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving rail connectivity in the region.

Accompanied by Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava and other senior officials, Somanna noted the transformation of Assam’s railway network over the past decade. “Till 2014, there was no railway electrification in Assam, but now we are set to achieve 100 per cent electrification within the year,” he stated. He also underscored ongoing efforts to double railway lines and lay new tracks to meet the rising transportation demands of the region.

As part of the government’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Guwahati railway station is undergoing a major revamp with a budget of Rs 181.09 crore, aimed at enhancing passenger amenities and streamlining operations. During his inspection, the minister reviewed waiting halls, QR code ticketing counters, and security measures, while also visiting the executive lounge, where he commended officials for maintaining high cleanliness standards. He further held discussions on additional upgrades to improve passenger experience.

Somanna also visited Dibrugarh railway station on Saturday to assess its redevelopment plans and later inspected the Bogibeel rail-cum-road bridge, a crucial link connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh over the Brahmaputra River. The bridge plays a vital role in improving both passenger and freight movement across the northeastern states.

The government remains focused on strengthening railway infrastructure in Assam and the entire Northeast, aiming for better connectivity, enhanced efficiency, and modernized railway services. With 100% electrification and infrastructural advancements, Assam is set to witness a new era of railway transformation, boosting economic growth and regional accessibility.
