Sports: In a surprising turn of events, Rajasthan Royals have entrusted the captaincy to young all-rounder Riyan Parag for the initial three matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. This decision comes as regular skipper Sanju Samson continues his recovery from a finger injury sustained during the T20I series against England.
Parag’s temporary leadership will commence with the Royals’ season opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Uppal Stadium on March 23. Following this, he will lead the team in their home matches in Guwahati against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 and Chennai Super Kings on March 30.
Samson’s injury, which occurred when he was struck by a Jofra Archer delivery, has necessitated a cautious approach to his return. While he is cleared to bat, he will not resume wicketkeeping or full fielding duties until he is deemed completely fit. This has opened the door for Parag, who has demonstrated leadership qualities in domestic cricket as captain of Assam.
The franchise’s decision to appoint Parag underscores their confidence in his abilities. Notably, Parag was Rajasthan Royals’ leading run-scorer in the previous IPL season, accumulating 573 runs at an impressive average of 52.09 and a strike rate of 149.21. His move to the No. 3 batting position proved pivotal, as he notched four half-centuries, including a high score of 84*.
Sanju Samson himself announced the leadership transition via a video on the team’s social media platforms, emphasizing Parag’s capability and calling for team support. “I am not completely fit for three more games,” Samson stated. “There are many leaders in the group, and Riyan will be leading the team. He is well capable, and I expect everyone to support him.”
