Assam’s Tezpur and North India Experience Zero Meter Visibility

Guwahati, 14th January: A historic moment unfolded in Tezpur, Assam, as zero-meter visibility was recorded, echoing the severe cold wave affecting North India this winter. Dense fog engulfed Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab on Sunday, causing significant disruptions in both road and air traffic. The plummeting mercury, driven by chilling north-western winds, led the Meteorological Department to issue a yellow alert in the national capital for the next three days. Delays in train services to Delhi were reported from various parts of the country due to the pervasive fog.

The Meteorological Department highlighted unprecedented zero-meter visibility in Ganganagar (Rajasthan), Patiala and Chandigarh (Punjab), Ambala (Haryana), Palam and Safdarjung (Delhi), Bareilly (UP), and Lucknow, among others. With a continued yellow alert in Delhi, the forecast predicts a two-day persistence of the cold wave, accompanied by morning fog throughout the week. While night temperatures may experience a slight increase due to cloudy skies during the day, the minimum temperature is expected to rise to seven degrees by January 11.

Saturday witnessed the season’s lowest temperature, dropping 0.3 degrees Celsius below Friday’s levels and four degrees below the norm. Dense fog persisted until late morning, creating a chilly atmosphere influenced by cold winds. Despite brief sunlight in the afternoon, the evening brought a further dip in temperature. The Regional Meteorological Centre in New Delhi reported a maximum temperature of 18.1 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal, and a minimum temperature of 3.6 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal. The Aya Nagar area experienced the coldest morning, recording a minimum temperature of three degrees.
