Assam’s Ujjwal Bhuyan appointed as Supreme Court judge

Guwahati, 6 July: The collegium of the Supreme Court presided over by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud recommended the appointment of two eminent jurists as justices of the high court on July 5.

It has been suggested that Justice S. Venkatanarayana Bhatti, the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan who is currently the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court be promoted to the Supreme Court bench.

The collegium of the Supreme Court which consists of Chief Justice Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, B.R. Gavai, and Surya Kant, met to make the judgement. The collegium uniformly recommended that Justices Bhuyan and Bhatti be appointed as judges in the nation’s top court, according to a formal resolution posted on the Supreme Court’s website on July 5.

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, who is recognised for his expertise in tax law, brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the table. He presided over a variety of cases in his prior capacity as a judge of the Bombay High Court, mainly those involving revenue issues. The collegium recognised Justice Bhuyan’s exceptional subject expertise as well as his standing for competence and morality.

The collegium in its resolution stated that, “The judgments authored by him cover wide-ranging issues pertaining to law and justice. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan is a judge with a good reputation for integrity and competence.”

Justice Bhuyan was appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court on October 17, 2011, and has been the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court since June 28, 2022. He would make an excellent choice for the Supreme Court bench due to his extensive experience and comprehensive knowledge of tax law.

The Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice S. Venkatanarayana Bhatti has also become well known for his knowledge of numerous legal specialties. Justice Bhatti has had a distinguished career that has included service as a judge on the High Court of Andhra Pradesh and later as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court. Through his decisions on a variety of legal matters, Justice Bhatti has proven to have exceptional legal knowledge and competence.

“The judgments authored by him dealing with issues in various branches of law stand testimony to his legal acumen and competence. Apart from according representation to the State of Andhra Pradesh, the appointment of Mr. Justice Bhatti will provide a value addition in terms of his acquired knowledge and experience. He commands a good reputation and possesses integrity and competence,” the Supreme Court collegiums affirmed in its resolution.

Justice Bhatti was appointed a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on April 12, 2013. On June 1, 2023, he was designated as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court. His appointment to the Supreme Court would help fix the lack of the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s representation on the bench since August 2022.
