Assault on Naga Woman Escalates Tensions in Manipur, FNJAC Issues Ultimatum

Imphal: An alleged assault on a Naga woman in Manipur’s K. Lungwiram village on January 7 has intensified ethnic tensions, with the Foothill Naga Joint Action Committee (FNJAC) demanding swift action.

The victim, reportedly attacked while working on her land, was “brutally assaulted in broad daylight by a gang of Kukis,” according to FNJAC’s press release. The committee described the incident as “a calculated attack” and “a direct challenge to the identity and dignity of the Naga people.”

FNJAC’s Demands:
• Immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
• A formal written apology from Kuki community leaders.

The committee issued a 48-hour ultimatum, warning of “appropriate measures” if the demands are not met. They also stated that Kuki leaders would be held accountable for any resulting unrest.

“This abominable crime reflects a blatant disregard for the principle of peaceful coexistence,” the FNJAC noted, emphasizing the historical hospitality extended by the Naga community to Kukis.

The incident exacerbates ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, where conflicts between communities have previously led to violence. Local authorities have yet to release an official statement on the matter or address the FNJAC’s demands.

The situation remains volatile as community leaders and local authorities work to defuse potential unrest.
