Bairabi-Sairang Railway Project in Mizoram Nearing Completion
Aizawl: The Bairabi-Sairang railway project, with a budget of ₹8,213.72 crore, is progressing rapidly, with over 93% of the work completed. This 51.38 km Broad Gauge railway line is expected to be fully operational by *July 2025. The track will establish a vital connection between Bairabi, near Assam, and Sairang, located on the outskirts of Aizawl, providing a direct route to Lengpui Airport.
Project Highlights:
- The railway line will include four stations along the route:
- Hortoki
- Kawnpui
- Mualkhang
- Sairang
- The challenging terrain necessitates the construction of 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges, along with 87 minor bridges.
Despite its significant progress, the project faced a tragic setback in August 2023, when one of the railway bridges under construction collapsed, resulting in the loss of 24 migrant workers from West Bengal.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line is set to play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity in Mizoram, fostering economic growth, and facilitating easier access to remote areas.
