Bajali Corruption Case: Broker Surrenders as CID Investigation Intensifies
Guwahati, 6th September: In a significant development in the Bajali corruption case, a broker identified as Sahidul Islam has voluntarily surrendered in Barpeta, Assam, according to reports that surfaced on Wednesday.
Following his surrender, Sahidul Islam was immediately taken into custody for questioning by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Assam at their headquarters late Tuesday night. Currently, he is undergoing intensive interrogation by CID officials.
Earlier today, the CID conducted a thorough search operation at the residence of Rabiul Islam, a prominent businessman in Bajali. During the operation, authorities reportedly seized a laptop and discovered 23 cheques of interest.
Sahidul Islam played a pivotal role as the broker involved in the corruption case, which came to light following the filing of an FIR by supari businessman Rabiul Islam. This FIR triggered a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Thus far, several high-ranking officers from the Bajali Police, including Superintendent of Police (SP) Siddhartha Buragohain, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Puskal Gogoi, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gayatri Sonowal, and her husband Bobby Singh Sharma, have been apprehended in connection with the ongoing investigation.
Additionally, it has been reported that a large suitcase belonging to SP Siddhartha Buragohain was recovered by the police in Pathsala. The suitcase was allegedly concealed by Buragohain.
Notably, the CID custody of three accused individuals, namely ASP Gayatri Sonowal, her husband Bobby Singh Sharma, and the intermediary Kishore Baruah, is set to conclude today. These individuals have been in the custody of the CID for a five-day period following their arrests in relation to the corruption case.
Rabiul Islam, the businessman who filed the FIR, has made serious allegations in his complaint, including wrongful detention by the police and extortion demands amounting to Rs 2.5 crores. He claims that he was threatened with a staged encounter, purportedly involving “links with Pakistani and Bangladeshi jihadi elements.” The threats were allegedly made by an individual who identified themselves as an “encounter specialist.”
