Ballot drop box set ablaze in Assam’s Karbi Anglong
Guwahati: Locals in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district destroyed a polling station and set the ballot boxes on fire on Wednesday during voting for the Autonomous Council.
The incident took place at the Punja Borpathar M E School polling station in Duar Amla (East Karbi Anglong).
According to the residents, “a missing stamp” sparked heated debates between election officials and voters.
Reportedly, security forces stationed at the polling site resorted to fire into the air to put the situation under control.
Voters chose the 26-member Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) on June 8.
It needs to be mentioned that the voting was done on paper ballots because the KAAC has yet to implement a rule requiring the use of electronic voting machine.
