Bangladesh Assures Formal Repatriation for Illegal Indian Residents, Urges India to Avoid “Push-ins”
Satkhira, Bangladesh – Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that any Indian nationals found to be residing illegally within Bangladesh will be repatriated through established diplomatic channels and legal procedures. The adviser’s remarks came during the inauguration of the third floating Border Outpost in Satkhira, as reported by the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
Emphasizing Bangladesh’s commitment to international norms, Chowdhury asserted that the nation does not engage in “push-ins” of individuals across the border, a practice he seemingly contrasted with India’s approach. He affirmed Bangladesh’s belief in resolving such matters through diplomatic engagement.
According to The Dhaka Tribune, Chowdhury disclosed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already communicated with India regarding the issue of illegal residents. He further noted that Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain and National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman are actively involved in maintaining diplomatic communication to address these concerns.
Chowdhury reiterated that India has been explicitly informed that any Bangladeshi citizens found to be residing in India without proper authorization should be returned via formal repatriation processes. He stressed that Bangladesh would reciprocate this approach for any Indian nationals discovered to be staying illegally within its borders.
The Home Affairs Adviser also alleged an incident on Friday where India purportedly attempted to “push in” individuals along the Brahmanbaria border. He claimed that this attempt was successfully thwarted through the combined efforts of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Ansar members, and local residents. Chowdhury urged local communities to remain united and vigilant to prevent such occurrences in the future.
