Bangladesh in Turmoil: Over 20 Awami League Leaders and Families Killed Amid Violence

International Desk, 7th August: Following the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, violent unrest has engulfed Bangladesh, resulting in the deaths of over 20 leaders of the Awami League and their family members.

The Dhaka Tribune reports that violence in Satkhira alone claimed the lives of at least 10 people on Monday as homes and businesses of Awami League leaders were vandalized and looted. In Cumilla, mobs killed 11 individuals, including five teenagers. A fire set by attackers at former councilor Mohammad Shah Alam’s three-story house led to six fatalities and injured ten others, with one critically in the ICU.

Additionally, four people were killed in a fire at the residence of MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul. Bodies of two leaders from the Awami League’s youth wing, Jubo League, were found in Bogra, where a mob hacked them to death. On Monday, locals discovered six bodies at the house of district Awami League Joint General Secretary Suman Khan.

The violence, triggered by Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, has resulted in over 400 deaths across the country. The Hindu minority community has been particularly targeted, with hundreds of homes, businesses, and temples burned and vandalized.

According to India Today, Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami has accepted responsibility for instigating attacks on minorities and Hindu temples. In a public statement, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman called for the immediate formation of a people’s government and condemned the violence. He urged the public to resist the miscreants and pledged full cooperation with the administration, asking the organization’s leaders to collaborate with authorities to maintain order.
