Bangladeshi Awami League Leader Found Dead in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills
Northeast Desk, 29th August: Officials on August 26 confirmed the discovery of the decomposed body of Ishaque Ali Khan Panna, a leader of Bangladesh’s Awami League, in a betelnut plantation in Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya. The body was located about 1.5 kilometers from the India-Bangladesh border.
Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad identified Panna through a passport found with the body. Panna, a former general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League and an Awami League leader from Pirojpur district, had been in hiding since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.
The body has been transported to Khliehriat Civil Hospital for further identification and investigation. Preliminary reports suggest Panna may have died of a cardiac arrest while attempting to cross the border. However, there are conflicting accounts, with some sources alleging he was involved in a shooting with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The investigation into Panna’s death is ongoing.
