Bangladeshi Electrician Nabbed in Meghalaya While Attempting Cross-Border Return

Shillong: In a dramatic chase, Meghalaya Police on Sunday apprehended a Bangladeshi national in Sohra, East Khasi Hills, who was attempting to return to his home country. The individual, identified as Robiul Islam, 32, from Tengra Khali in Pirojpur, Bangladesh, had been working as an electrician in Bengaluru without valid documentation.

The arrest unfolded on Saturday evening after police, acting on a specific tip-off, established a checkpoint in Sohra. According to Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, the vehicle ferrying Islam failed to stop when signalled by the authorities, prompting a swift pursuit. The chase culminated near the picturesque Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint, where the car was finally intercepted.

Upon questioning, Islam confessed to his Bangladeshi nationality and admitted to working in Bengaluru. He further divulged that he regularly traversed this route for his cross-border movements. The driver of the vehicle and another occupant, both hailing from Ichamati Bazaar, a stone’s throw from the international border, were also taken into custody for their alleged role in facilitating illegal entry.
