Bangladeshi ship hit by missile at Ukrainian port, 1 killed

Guwahati: In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a sailor from the Bangladeshi-flagged ship was killed after the ship was hit by missiles in a Ukrainian port on Wednesday.

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’s pro-western country, the ship that arrived at port Olvia on February 22 became trapped.

Sultana Laila Hossain, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Poland, who is also in charge of Ukraine, confirmed the death of a seaman without revealing the deceased’s name.

According to national media reports, MV Banglar Samriddhi which is owned by Bangladesh Shipping Corporation was attacked on Wednesday around 9:25 p.m. (Bangladesh time).

Reports further claimed that a crew member identified Omar Faruk Tuhin told over whatsapp from the stranded ship at the Ukraine’s port that the deceased was Hadisur Rahman, a third engineer of the ship.

He claimed that the crew members were able to put out the fire that had started as a result of the attack almost immediately.

Despite repeated tries, no officials from Bangladesh Shipping Corporation could be reached for comment.

According to a BSC official, the MV Banglar Samriddhi arrived at port Olvia in Ukraine on February 22 after departing from Eregli in Turkey on February 21.

The ship was stranded with 29 crew members at the port of Olvia, according to BSC general manager Mujibur Rahman, who reported on February 27 that the port authorities had prohibited transportation due to the Russian invasion and had not given clearance.
