The Pura Besakih Temple is known to be the most beautiful and largest Hindu temple in the world. This temple is built on a mountain called Mount Agung, which looks like an island. The beauty of this temple, situated in the midst of the highest mountains of sand, is its biggest feature. This temple is also known as the mother temple of Bali.
It is to be noted that the name of the Besakih temple actually comes from the Sanskrit word Basuki. The description of the Basuki serpent can be found in many texts and puranas. Later, the word ‘Bachuki’ was changed to Java in Indonesia. This word means congratulations.
There are many Idols of Hindu gods and goddesses and many small and large temples in the premises of the Besakih temple. The Basuki Nag is also worshiped in a large part of it. The Hindu community in Indonesia come here in large numbers and perform religious rituals. Hindu festivals are celebrated with great pomp and show. Locals also come here often for the beauty of the temple. It is to be noted that the priests and devotees present in this temple are permanent residents of Indonesia.
In the premises of Besakih Temple there is the Pura Penateran Agung main temple where Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are worshipped. If you come here, don’t forget to see the beauty of the polar tower while visiting the temple premises. It is worth mentioning that more than 80 small and big temples have been built here. The temple is believed to have been built in the 8th century. However, a lot of renovation work has been done in the temple premises in the last few years, due to which the old structure has changed somewhat.
