Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra Earn UNESCO Recognition

National: In a moment of profound cultural significance, the sacred manuscripts of the Bhagavad Gita and Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra have been included in UNESCO’s prestigious Memory of the World Register.

This recognition, announced on Thursday, marks the addition of 74 new documentary heritage collections from across the globe, bringing the total number of inscribed items to 570.

UNESCO highlighted that the new entries also encompass significant contributions to the scientific revolution, the historical impact of women, and key milestones in multilateralism, representing 72 countries and four international organizations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his elation on X, describing the inscriptions as “a proud moment for every Indian across the world.” He emphasized the enduring influence of these texts, stating, “The inclusion of the Gita and Natyashastra in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register is a global recognition of our timeless wisdom and rich culture. The Gita and Natyashastra have nurtured civilisation and consciousness for centuries. Their insights continue to inspire the world.”

The Natyashastra, revered as a foundational text on performing arts, now stands alongside the Bhagavad Gita in this esteemed global archive. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also conveyed his pride on X, hailing it as a “historic moment for Bharat’s civilisational heritage.” He further elaborated, “These timeless works are more than literary treasures they are philosophical and aesthetic foundations that have shaped Bharat’s worldview and the way we think, feel, live, and express. With this, we now have 14 inscriptions from our country on this international register.” The minister also shared visual representations of the revered texts. This latest honor underscores the enduring global significance of India’s ancient wisdom and artistic brilliance.
