Sports Desk, 20th September: Former Indian football icon Bhaichung Bhutia has voiced his concern over India’s recent slide in the FIFA rankings, emphasizing the urgent need for reform in the sport’s governance within the country. India, which once ranked within the top 100, has seen its position drop to 125th following a disappointing performance in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
Reflecting on the situation, Bhutia stated, “It’s not a great sign. We have been on the decline for quite some time now. From being ranked in the top 100 to going down to 125. I think football needs a new governing body and election and a fresh start.”
India’s recent defeat to Qatar on June 11, 2024, at Doha’s Jassim bin Hamad Stadium further compounded the nation’s woes. Despite taking the lead with a goal by Lallianzuala Chhangte in the 37th minute, India ultimately lost 1-2 after conceding two late goals, effectively dashing their hopes of advancing in the World Cup qualifiers.
