Bhaichung Bhutia Condemns Violence Against Minorities in Bangladesh
Sports: Former Indian footballer Bhaichung Bhutia has voiced strong condemnation of the increasing violence against minorities in Bangladesh, including the controversial arrest of ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Bhutia urged the Bangladeshi government to address the situation promptly and protect vulnerable communities.
“It is very unfortunate, especially the attacks on religious leaders. The Bangladesh government should look into the matter and take care of the minorities,” Bhutia stated.
The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges has drawn significant international attention. The charges stem from allegations of disrespecting the Bangladeshi national flag during an October 25 rally in Chittagong, where a saffron flag was allegedly hoisted above the country’s flag. A complaint against Das was filed on October 31 by a local politician.
West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar also criticized the incidents, describing the violence as “an outright attack on Hindus and Hinduism.” He expressed concern over the declining Hindu population in Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for Indian Hindus to take lessons from these developments.
The Chattogram court has deferred the hearing on Das’s bail petition to January 2, 2025, due to the absence of the defence lawyer. Until then, Das will remain in custody, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mofizur Rahman.
